More than 20 kids from the Pondok Sruni Foundation joined a feast of sport with BritCham at the Jakarta Highland Gathering Community Day at Karawaci on 18 May 2014. The orphanage was one of eight community groups invited to try some traditional British sports and games including rugby, cricket, tug-of-war, outward bound and, of course football. The community day, which has adopted the British Chamber community tag, ‘Giving Kids A Sporting Chance’ followed the traditional Jakarta Highland Gathering that attracted around 8000 visitors.

BritCham Events spokesperson Kishi explained: “Many of the kids do not have access to organized sports. The way these sports are structured not only provides an opportunity for physical development, but to also learn some life-skills such as teamwork, personal discipline and respect. Most importantly, everyone had a day of great fun.”

An unexpected surprise was the appearance of former Liverpool, Newcastle and Galatseray footballer Barry Venison who was visiting Jakarta and Bandung ahead of a series of legends’ football matches scheduled for later in the year. Barry enjoyed watching over some of the football drills and stayed on for a bite of lunch with the kids.

The BritCham Chairman Adrian Short and Executive Director Chris Wren were also in attendance to award certificates and souvenirs from the Britain is GREAT campaign.
